A fast party word game for two to eight players, played around one phone.

Coming soon. App Store and Google Play listings will be linked here when they are live.

What it does

Blabbergast is a fast, loud party word game for two to eight players, made for game night, family dinners, and road trips. One phone sits in the middle of the table. Each round opens with a category, and every turn deals a fresh letter and starts the clock: name something in the category that starts with your letter before the buzzer, then tap the screen, and it’s the next player’s turn. Miss, and you’re on the block. The last player standing wins the round, and the first to the target score wins the game.

The phone can’t hear the answers, so the table is the judge, with a challenge vote for any answer in doubt. Players, categories, and settings stay on your device. There is no account, no advertising, and no internet connection needed to play.

Key features

  • A category for each round, and a fresh letter and a countdown for every turn
  • Letters dealt from a shuffled bag, so none repeats until the bag runs dry
  • Laps that settle together: everyone still in gets the same number of turns, everyone who missed goes out together, and if the whole table misses, nobody goes out and the lap runs again
  • A challenge vote for any answer in doubt: the next player’s clock stops while the table votes thumbs up or thumbs down, then play picks up with the same letter and the time that was left
  • Eighty-five categories in nine packs, from things in a kitchen to bad names for a boat, each hand-picked to have real answers for every Friendly letter: all but Q, U, V, X, Y, and Z
  • The Full Game unlocks every pack, writing your own categories, and full alphabet mode, with Q, X, Z, and the rest
  • Turns from three to sixty seconds, the number of round wins that takes the game, and how challenges work, all yours to set
  • Light and dark themes, sound and vibration you can turn off, and support for larger text
  • Plays offline, with no account and no advertising

Screenshots

Captured from Blabbergast.

  • A turn in progress in Round 2, Lap 2: Sam is up, the category is Pizza toppings that should be illegal, and the letter A sits inside a countdown ring with nine seconds left. The row of players above shows who is on the block and who is out, and the letters already dealt this round are dimmed along the bottom, above I’m stuck.
  • A challenge vote over the blurred game: “Does Maya’s answer count?” with a thumbs-up Yes button, a thumbs-down No button, and twelve seconds to decide. Below, a note says Jordan’s clock is stopped at twelve seconds and the answer counts if nobody decides in time.
  • The start of Round 1: the category is Bad excuses for being late, Maya goes first, and a Start button waits until everyone is ready.
  • The end of Round 4 under falling confetti: Maya takes it, with Leo, Sam, Jordan, and Priya out, above the scores (Maya 2, Jordan 1, Priya 1, Leo 0, Sam 0) and a Next round button.
  • The Categories screen with the Full Game: a search box, the promise that every category has real answers for every Friendly letter, two categories of the players’ own (Things at our family reunion, and Songs for a road trip), and the Everyday things pack with five of its ten categories selected. Forty-one categories are selected in all.
  • The Categories screen in the free game: writing your own categories is locked, with an Unlock button, as part of the Full Game. In the Everyday things and Food & drink packs, the free categories (Things in a kitchen, Things that make a noise, and Foods you eat with your hands) are selected, and the rest show only a question mark.
